New Westminster lowers the light industrial tax rate by 20% in 2013.

In a City that covers 15 square kilometres, every square foot counts.

In 2013, the New Westminster City Council implemented a tax reduction for our light industrial lands.  The reduction will be phased in over the course of three years, beginning in 2013 with a 20% reduction.  In 2014 there will be a 5% reduction, followed by a 9% reduction in 2015 for a total of 34%.

This decision was made in January, and interest has quickly grown with inquiries for light industrial sites building steam.

So what does this mean for New Westminster?
With other cities in the Metro Vancouver area rezoning their light industrial lands, New Westminster has made it a priority to preserve that land and its uses. This means that light industrial companies can continue to thrive while diversifying the local economy.

More Cash Mobs on the way.

You may be saying, “What’s a Cash Mob?” A Cash Mob is a group of people who agree to spend at least $20 at a locally-owned establishment to support business and the area’s economy.

Organized by local business owner, Heather Corbett of Evenate Creative Group, New Westminster’s first Cash Mob at Cadeaux Gifts was an amazing success, attracting the attention of media outlets such as Global TV and CTV.

People gathering at a store to help support the local business is a trend that New Westminster wants to continue.  A new business will be selected every 3 months, so follow Cash Mob New West on Twitter and Facebook to stay up to date on the latest mob.

Anticipation for the Anvil Centre grows.

New Westminster’s newest addition to the downtown core is quickly taking shape. Now that construction activity is above grade, people can't help but notice the progress at the corner of 8th and Columbia.

What will the Anvil Centre be used for? The Anvil Centre will be four storeys and will have 84,000 square feet of interior space including:

  • Conference and meeting facilities with room for a 500 seat reception
  • Flexible 350 seat non-proscenium theatre
  • Multi-purpose rooms and art studios
  • Civic art gallery and gift shop
  • City’s museum and archives
  • Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame
  • Tourism New Westminster’s visitor information desk
  • Street level retail space

Above the civic facility will be a nine storey, 137,000 square foot office tower (Merchant Square). It will offer first class, LEED Gold office space in a highly efficient layout.

This new addition along with Trapp+Holbrook, Northbank, and the newly opened Shops at New West Station will contribute new life and vibrancy in downtown New Westminster.
